Church History

Pleasant Green Missionary Baptist Church was organized in the year 1885.This was twenty years after the Civil War had ended.A small group of worshippers formed a mission on what is now Eleventh Avenue North. In 1886 they called Reverend William Haynes as the first pastor. Reverend Haynes served as pastor for the next five years and led the church to purchase the current church lot and build a frame church.

During its 130 year history, Pleasant Green has had only eleven pastors. Two pastors had exceptionally long tenures. Reverend Charles Fields served 36 years from 1901- 1937 and Reverend Andrew L. Porter served 37 and ½ years from 1944 – 1982. During Reverend Field’s tenure the church building was built at a cost of $30,000.00. During Reverend Porter’s tenure the church mortgage was burned and the church parsonage was purchased.

Over the years Pleasant Green has extended its ministry to include community outreach. In 1990 Reverend Dr. Forrest Harris was called as the pastor and was successful in organizing TNT (Tying Nashville Together), a program that united inter-faith, multi-racial, civic and social groups to address diversity issues in the Nashville community. During Reverend Harris’ tenure the Andrew L. Porter Educational wing was dedicated. The Room-in-the Inn outreach ministry for homeless and disadvantaged citizens was also initiated at this time. This program is still operational today, providing food and shelter to the homeless on weekends during the winter months. Reverend Dr. Alvin Miller (2003-2008) also extended the ministry of Pleasant Green into the community with his radio broadcasts of the morning worship services at Pleasant Green. These broadcasts were heard locally on three radio stations and also overseas in Nigeria. Pleasant Green sent a shipment of Bibles to the congregation in Nigeria as a result of these broadcasts.

The current pastor of Pleasant Green is Reverend Dr. Christopher Jackson. Since his installation in March 2013, Pastor Jackson has led the church in making extensive exterior and interior church renovations, added a college ministry, expanded Bible study offerings to three times during the week, and added new members to the church. Pleasant Green is truly moving forward with the new church theme and goal: “Greatness Through Godly Growth”.
